Posted on March 15, 2015 at 12:41 pm

First of all, make sure to install VirtualBox with Extension Pack.

Then type these commands to create the Windows XP Virtual Machine:

**Edit the /full/path/to/iso.iso to match the ISO file**

VBoxManage createvm --name "Windows XP" --ostype WindowsXP --register
VBoxManage modifyvm "Windows XP" --memory 256 --acpi on --boot1 dvd --nic1 nat
VBoxManage createhd --filename "WinXP.vdi" --size 10000
VBoxManage storagectl "Windows XP" --name "IDE Controller" --add ide --controller PIIX4
VBoxManage storageattach "Windows XP" --storagectl "IDE Controller" --port 0 --device 0 --type hdd --medium "WinXP.vdi"
VBoxManage storageattach "Windows XP" --storagectl "IDE Controller" --port 0 --device 1 --type dvddrive --medium /full/path/to/iso.iso

Now start the VM:

VBoxHeadless --startvm "Windows XP"

Example output:

Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.3.20
(C) 2008-2014 Oracle Corporation
All rights reserved.

VRDE server is listening on port 3389.

Then you can use Remmina to connect to the VM via RDP.

Make sure to install also remmina-plugin-rdp.
